BayREN trainings are available to educate local government officials and the private sector building community in key aspects of code compliance and enforcement. Each course below is ICC CEU certified and each registrant will receive 0.1 CEUs upon completion. Training topics are offered as a series and each training series addresses specific energy code compliance strategies and best practices. BayREN Codes & Standards instructors are available remotely Monday to Friday from 7AM to 7PM in the Bay Area nine county region to educate local building departments on 2019 Energy Code (Title 24, Part 6) requirements, plan check review & field inspections processes & best practices for improving code compliance & enforcement at no cost. Like onsite trainings, online-live trainings are approximately 60 minutes long and ICC certified (0.1 CEU).

To request an On-Line training for a specific date and time, email codes@bayren.org and provide the following information:

  • Requested training(s)
  • Preferred date(s) and time(s)
  • Expected number of attendees
  • Indicate whether you would like to open it up to building department staff from neighboring jurisdictions.

Following scheduling, a Zoom registration link will be sent to you to share with your jurisdiction.


On-Demand Trainings


BayREN Codes & Standards on-demand trainings are recorded on-line trainings that can be accessed at any time. As opposed to “on-line” trainings, which are conducted live, individuals can access “on-demand” trainings at their convenience at any time. Like onsite and live on-line, on-demand trainings are approximately 60 minutes long and ICC certified (0.1 CEU).

In order to receive ICC Continuing Education Units for on-demand trainings, you will need to complete the training evaluation section at the end of the form. You will receive your ICC Certificate within approximately 1 week via email from codes@bayren.org. If you do not receive your Certificate with 2 weeks of completing the training, please email codes@bayren.org.

Heat Pump Water Heater Trainings


Description: Heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) are an increasingly popular technology that are a highly efficient means of providing hot water to houses.  This training will describe HPWHs, when HPWHs are allowed under the 2019 Code, code requirements for installation, and how to complete compliance forms.

Topics Covered: Overview of water heater technologies and trends, identifying HPWHs in the field, Energy Code requirements for HPWH installations and replacements, Energy Code compliance forms, and requirements specific to HPWHs.

2019 Energy Code Changes- Residential

Description: This course will provide an overview of the 2019 residential energy code changes.

Topics Covered: Changes to the residential portions of the 2019 Energy Code.

Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Registry

Description: This course explores the advantages of using the online HERS registry to track and verify compliance forms electronically. Course includes a live demonstration of projects for the jurisdiction in training. Attendees will need to bring addresses for specific projects.

Topics Covered: HERS registry, what projects are required to be in the registry, how to track CF1R, CF2R and CF3R forms electronically so hard copies do not need to be printed.

Target Audience: Permit technicians, plan checkers, field inspectors.

Residential New Construction

Description: This course provides a basic review of residential new construction energy code.

Topics Covered: Comprehensive residential energy code compliance processes, compliance forms, prescriptive and performance approaches, and HERS features, with a focus on new construction, larger additions.

Target Audience: Permit technicians, plan checkers, field inspectors.

Duration: Short Course (60-90 min)


Residential Additions

Description: This course explores specific instruction on residential additions Energy Code. Course extends content learned in Residential New Construction Course.

Topics Covered: Comprehensive residential energy code compliance processes, compliance forms, prescriptive and performance approaches, and HERS features, specific to additions.

Residential Alterations Compliance

Description: This course will explain how to process residential alterations projects, which are mostly over-the-counter permits such as HVAC changeouts, window replacements and water heater replacements.

Topics Covered: CalCERTS HERS registry, what projects are required to be in the registry, how to track CF1R, CF2R and CF3R forms electronically so hard copies do not need to be printed.

Target Audience: Permit technicians, plan checkers, field inspectors.

Residential Envelope Compliance

Description: This course investigates residential envelope compliance issues.

Topics Covered: Residential envelope components (windows, ceilings, walls, floors, etc.), forms, HERS features, plan check and field inspection issues specific to residential envelope.

Residential Zero Net Energy for New Construction

Description: This introductory-level course will introduce ZNE fundamentals and practices that are the basis of ZNE projects.

Topics Covered: What is ZNE, how ZNE impacts energy use, home performance with ZNE, how to meet remaining energy needs of a building.

Target Audience: Building professionals in the private and public sectors

Nonresidential Lighting

Description: This course will explore lighting compliance and their implications for plan review and field inspection.

Topics Covered: The short course focuses on indoor lighting forms, process, and acceptance tests. The long course also covers lighting power density, controls, and daylit spaces, in addition to topics covered in short course.

Nonresidential Tenant Improvements and Alterations

Description: This course will explore nonresidential tenant improvements and alterations compliance issues.

Description: This course will help attendees understand and better enforce adopted reach codes within a specific jurisdiction. The course includes a combination of general practices as well as customized training for the jurisdiction’s reach code.

Quality Insulation Installation (QII) Training


HERS Verified Quality Insulation Installation Training
Now Available!

In partnership with Energy Code Ace, BayREN is now offering an ICC certified on-line* training designed to help Designers/Architects, Energy Consultants, Contractors, Developers, Building Department Staff, and HERS Raters advance their understanding of HERS Verified Quality Insulation Installation (QII) per Title 24, Part 6 and ease implementation.

The course will:

  • Identify the requirements associated with QII that may be unique and atypical to a residential construction project.
  • Discuss how a project can start off on the right foot with support within the design drawings.
  • Equip you with additional resources available to learn more about QII.

The course is delivered in a 60-90 minute Zoom session. Participants must successfully complete the evaluation survey at the end of the training to complete the course and receive ICC CEUs.
